all thoughts of art were over shadowed by the unfolding rescue by the lifeboats fron Spurn and Grimsby as the lifeboatmen got into trouble themselves whilst saving lives, overturned boats, fire on the yatch.
All turned out well in the end.
Always a big thankyou to those who risk their lives for us regardless of the perils ahead.

Turned out nice again.
Mr Peter Regan visited me today, he was born at spurn point 70 years ago, his family worked with the lighthouse and the lifeboats for many years. It was very interesting to meet him and his friend and i hope they had a great day.

I've finally got back to the lighthouse, the flooding in Hull and Holderness has been awful, so many people have been affected.
My lights are broken with the damp but my artwork is ok, and its drying out slowly.
The sea and river are so calm, as if nothing happened in the last couple of weeks.

The thunder and lightening, the pouring rain which struck us as we reached the point made for a spectacular yet slightly scary experience. One not to be missed. We got back to the lighthouse in time for a sandwich and a dry off.

BBC country file filming today and the BBC look north aired my piece today as well, its been really interesting and i would like to thank them all for their patience and help.
It was a lovely sunny day and i met a great group of ladies from Barton, who i hope enjoyed the look around my studio.

Someone asked me WHY? Why art?
I once described it, being an artist, as being some sort of affliction, the compulsion to create is so strong and consumes my mind constantly, it seems to feed from itself.
I can get quite irritable if I don’t create and develop the ideas that float around in my head. My sketchbook / ideas / workbook helps to concretise these thoughts, partly so I can’t forget them and to free up thinking space in my head. They are also a good record of what I am doing, my artistic process is important to me. A Diarist may have similar ideas. I remember disliking having to create a sketch book at Art College, having to follow a syllabus isn’t the same as recording free flowing thoughts and ideas.

When I am creating a piece of art words come to my mind which connect with the thing I am doing.

Met a friend, had a bit of a walk.
The road is still closed to the public, but they are in the process of mending it again, horray, thankyou!
All my other pieces have been washed away, a clean canvas awaits.
The process of creation and destruction is indicative of life itself and echoes in the landscape around me.

Road is open, but perhaps not for long, there are not enough passing places and people will get stuck or scratch their cars, don't we love this world of litigation, its ok to invade other countries lots of people dying but trip over a paving stone and we find someone to punish.
Sorry i'm going off on one.
Its a great day today, sun is hot with just a little breeze, perfect!
I made several pieces today, spirals, waves and a self image.

The recent storms and high tides have reeked havoc on the point. The road has been damaged and the way is now closed, hence the reason we had to walk all the way to the lighthouse, in the cold and wind. Not what I had intended, my arty meander was now a major slog. I still enjoyed myself and I hope everyone else did too.
there was loads of stuff washed up along the beach. there was a 4 foot difference in the sand level in places, leaving lots of exposed concrete from the old road and a large shingle bank near the wardens cottage.
That feeling of bleakness was never more apparant, I was actually pleased to return home to a steaming hot mug of tea.
Thanks again everyone, I hope nobody feels the worse for wear, just envigorated and enthused.

concentric circles and spirals were the order of the day.
I love the brick orange it contrasts so well with the landscape, pity it does't always look so good on a building.
It was a great afternoon, ending with a really red/orange sunset.

met up with an old friend today, had a good walk, thanks.
university of Leeds students looked into the studio this afternoon, thanks to them i hope they like the artwork on the web.
it was quite windy today, nice and bright. i found an interesting piece of leather, formed as if used as a legging perhaps, it dried to a wonderful rippling shape.
Naturally created forms are often more intriguing than something one only imagines.

What a grey day, cold with a hint of damp. A high tide has swept the beaches clean. I created a small brick pebble spiral for me and the sea. It was gone by the time I came back from the studio.
I met a nice couple resting on the beach, a fine creation, by anon.

5/2/07 chalk spiral

Created a stone totem and a chalk spiral this afternoon.
Well i'm sat at my table in the lighthouse, looking out across the humber. A large gas rig is being moved up the river and I can see across to the other side, Immingham , I think.
Its cold, snow forecast, the wind howls through the empty lighthouse, making it feel all the more wild and exciting.
I have a splendid view of the older lighthouse in the river and the lifeboat is anchored a little away from the jetty.
Its 4pm. the sun is starting to set, turning the sky orange. A great day

A lovely day for walking the beach , the tide was in, sand had covered much of the detritus. Collected small, dead ,dried pipe fish which seem to litter the beach again. A good day for thinking. Watched the waves and the sun going down across the river.

Cold, bitterly cold, windy, roaring noise from the sea blown waves. The marram grass quivers like the hair on a large arm brown now from the burning salt winds, it rustles like the erect tail feathers on a peacocks tail, beautiful yet menacing.
Lots of plastics to find today , lumps of tar, hundreds of dead pipe fish.
I met an interesting man hunting for evidence of sewage among the seaweed debris, its not hard to find.

My first visit inside the lighthouse studio, a really interesting space. I think the shape will have an effect on the artwork I produce there, I’m thinking long and thin, blocks of colour. The view from the top is wonderful; one can really see the fragility and that we are so very small in the expanse of sea.
A large whale has been washed up on the riverside @60, it stinks lots, but is quite interesting to see. The university boffins are desluffing the bones to preserve them.

there has been a little concern that the flowers may have been picked on the nature reserve, this is against the NNR policy. This spiral was created in my back garden from plants in my grass. i go for the natural look in garden landscaping, more time for art.

18.12.06 sand spiral

very misty along the coast road. cold and bright at spurn. sun trying to burn through.Nice and deserted today along the beach.there has been no high tides, lots of footprints at the top of the beach.
i created a good spiral in the sand today.starting in the middle and working outwards i feel very focused on the piece and the art i am creating, i seem to be able to think really wellat the time.
i met a man who talked about fossiling for profit , it felt a little like pillaging the beach, it wasn't science,the finds were not recorded and left behind.
i collected more plastic detritus for my collages, soon to be exhibited at dean clough galleries in halifax,uk.,18 january 2007.

spurn point start

anxious, nervous ,this is a first for me.
i am going to use this space to document my time as AIR in 2007, starting on january 1st

Spurn Point is a fast disappearing stretch of the
East Yorkshire coastline.
It has been the greatest influence on my artistic endeavours for the last twenty years and my life since I was seven years old, living at Paull on the Humber bank.

A fascination with painting and drawing naturally led me to this raw spit of land where I started to record my impressions. A love of collecting and beachcombing conspired to bring me to the artworks I create now. Through my art therapy work I am interested in the process of creating art and I have let that process take me where it will.
